New vehicles drive reliable waste services in Cape Town

Since the start of the current financial year, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate has acquired 61 new vehicles, representing an investment of about R110 million to ensure more reliable service delivery.

The vehicles include a variety of refuse compactors, refuse trucks (otherwise known as tipper trucks) and other essential fleet additions that will be deployed across depots in the metro to strengthen frontline services.

A key feature of the new compactors is the pump-to-roll function where the power take-off automatically disengages between handbrake engagements. This innovation allows drivers to focus on the road without the need to manually switch between load and unload functions during refuse collection, improving both safety and efficiency.

‘A reliable fleet is central to our ability to deliver consistent and high-quality services to residents. This investment not only increases our operational capacity, but also introduces new technology that makes the work safer and more efficient for our staff,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

This is part of the Urban Waste Management Directorate’s broader Waste strategy to optimise existing services by enhancing efficiency, modernisation and capacity building to support Cape Town’s growing population. It also complements our ongoing efforts to expand recycling initiatives, improve waste minimisation, and maintain clean and healthy communities across the metro.
